Tips for Driving in Rain and Fog

Wiber Rent A Car

In Spain, we usually enjoy an enviable climate, but we also know that autumn and winter can bring sudden heavy rain and thick fog that may complicate your road trips.

And because we want your driving experience to be Easier. Smarter. Better., we’ve created this practical guide with useful tips for driving in rain and fog. Because enjoying the ride also means staying safe along the way.

Driving in rain: useful tips to stay in control

Rain completely changes how your car behaves and grips the road. Here are some essential tips for driving in rain without unpleasant surprises:

1. Lights: see and be seen

One of the most common mistakes when driving in the rain is using the wrong lights. Position lights aren’t enough—switch on your dipped headlights instead. Avoid using full beams as they can reflect off the rain and make visibility worse.

Make sure you’re familiar with your car’s lights and wipers, even though our rental cars often come with automatic systems. At Wiber, all vehicles undergo regular checks so you can drive worry-free—even when the weather takes a turn.

2. Lower your speed and increase your distance

When roads are wet, tyre grip is reduced. Lower your speed by at least 10% from the legal limit and double your following distance from the car ahead.

Did you know that in the event of aquaplaning, the best reaction is to gently lift your foot off the accelerator and avoid braking sharply? Staying calm and in control is key to avoiding skids.

Driving in fog: extra caution and full concentration

Fog can appear suddenly, especially in mountainous areas, near rivers or along the coast. That’s when you need to be fully prepared. Here are some tips for driving in fog safely:

1. Fog lights are your best friend

In moderate or dense fog, switch on your front fog lights. If visibility is very poor, turn on your rear fog light too. Avoid using full beams—they can create glare and reduce visibility even more.

Make sure you know how to operate your fog lights before setting off.

2. Slow down, no rush

When driving in fog, the key is to adapt your style. Gradually reduce your speed and avoid unnecessary overtaking. Keep a safe distance and use the road edges as a reference if the centre line isn’t visible.

Bonus: 3 common mistakes to avoid

  1. Failing to adapt to the weather: you can't drive the same way in clear skies as you would in heavy rain or fog. Adapt your driving accordingly.

  2. Using your phone or getting distracted: in poor conditions, your full attention is absolutely necessary.

  3. Stopping on the shoulder with no visibility: if you can’t continue, look for an exit or safe area—never stop in the middle of the road.

Drive safe, even if the weather doesn’t cooperate

Whether you’re renting a car from Wiber in Mallorca, Málaga, Alicante, Valencia, Ibiza or Seville, or you're already out on the road, remember: driving in rain or fog demands extra attention, patience and foresight.
