Off-season Mallorca: what to do in autumn and winter by car

things to do by car in low season

Wiber Rent A Car

Mallorca is not just sun and beaches. When autumn and winter arrive, the island transforms into a peaceful, authentic destination full of unique experiences. Traveling during this season means enjoying without crowds, with mild temperatures and the freedom to explore the island by car.

If you’re wondering what to do in Mallorca in autumn or winter, here’s a list of specific plans you can enjoy at your own pace. It’s easy: rent a car at Palma Airport with us and set off to discover the island at your own rhythm.

1. Hiking route through the Barranc de Biniaraix

This gorge, located in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana, is one of the most spectacular routes on the island. Autumn is the perfect time to hike it, with mild temperatures and landscapes painted in earthy tones.

The Camí des Barranc and Camí Vell trails, declared a Site of Cultural Interest, cross a landscape of cliffs and ravines where humans used stone to build terraces, huts, and paths for survival. In 1986, the school of “margers” (dry stone builders) was founded to preserve this valuable example of traditional Mallorcan dry stone architecture and revive this ancestral craft.

👉 Wiber Plan: Drive to Biniaraix, park at the entrance to the village, and start the hike. End with a snack of “coca de patata” in Sóller.

2. Enjoy the Llampuga Fair in Cala Ratjada

In October, this gastronomic fair celebrates the “llampuga” (mahi-mahi), a typical seasonal fish. Local restaurants prepare both innovative and traditional recipes.

👉 Plan by car: Drive to Cala Ratjada, enjoy the fair, and then take a walk to the lighthouse at sunset.

3. Visit vineyards in Binissalem and Consell

Autumn is harvest season and the perfect time to visit wineries like José L. Ferrer or Tianna Negre. You can enjoy wine tastings paired with local products.

👉 Wiber Plan: Book a wine tour in Binissalem and combine it with lunch in Alaró, where you can try the famous roasted lamb.

4. Taste seasonal dishes in a traditional “celler”

During autumn and winter, Mallorca fills with rich, comforting flavors: “sopas mallorquinas”, “arroz brut”, “tumbet”, or “frit de matances”. The cellers of Inca or Santa Maria del Camí are authentic places to try them.

👉 Tip: Park your car in Inca and take the chance to visit its Thursday market.

5. Enjoy the almond blossom spectacle

Between late January and February, Mallorca’s fields are covered in white and pink hues as the almond trees bloom. Areas like Bunyola, Selva, or Lloseta offer stunning landscapes to explore by car.

👉 Wiber Plan: Take a circular route from Palma through Bunyola, Selva, and Caimari, ending with a coffee with views in Lluc.

6. Explore Palma in winter and enjoy its culture without crowds

Winter is the best time to enjoy Palma on foot: the illuminated Cathedral, the Almudaina Palace, the noble courtyards, and museums such as Es Baluard or the Miró Foundation.

👉 Extra: Park your car on the outskirts and use public transport to move easily through the historic center.

7. Join the Sant Sebastià and Sant Antoni festivities

  • Sant Antoni (January 17): celebrated in many towns with bonfires, “dimonis” (devils), and live music.
  • Sant Sebastià (January 20): Palma’s biggest celebration, with concerts and a festive atmosphere in its squares.

👉 Wiber Plan: Rent your car and visit several towns during the celebrations, such as Sa Pobla or Manacor, where traditions are lived intensely.

8. Relax in natural hot springs during winter

In the area of Sant Joan de la Font Santa, near Campos, you’ll find the island’s only natural thermal spa. Perfect for a day of calm and wellbeing.

👉 Local tip: Combine this experience with lunch in Ses Salines or a walk along the deserted beach of Es Trenc.

9. Magical sunset spots

Autumn and winter offer clearer skies and more intense sunsets. The best viewpoints to reach by car:

  • Cap de Formentor (without the summer crowds)
  • Sant Elm, overlooking Dragonera Island
  • Cap Blanc Lighthouse, in the south of the island

10. Christmas markets and lights in Palma

In December, the city lights up with thousands of bulbs. The Christmas markets at Plaza Mayor and Pueblo Español are perfect for strolling and tasting traditional sweets like “robiols” or artisanal nougat.
