Wiber Rent A Car

Málaga has everything it takes to become your perfect travel base. In less than 3 hours by car, you can go from a walk by the sea to a picture-perfect white village, hike through gorges, lose yourself in a monumental city or end the day in front of a dune overlooking the Atlantic. And when you want to make the most of every day, that is worth its weight in gold.

If you land on the Costa del Sol, it is even easier: our car hire at Malaga Airport office is just 5 minutes from the airport and includes a free shuttle service. And if you choose Smart Car, you can pick up the car directly from the airport car park during office hours and drop it off 24 hours a day.

We have put together these 7 getaways from Málaga using Malaga city as the reference point, with estimated driving times that may vary depending on traffic and the season.

Getaway 1. Nerja and Frigiliana: sea, caves and whitewashed streets in an easy getaway

Nerja is around 42 minutes by car from Málaga and Frigiliana around 46 minutes away, so together they make one of the best quick getaways when you want variety without any hassle. In Nerja, the must-see is the Balcón de Europa, perched on the cliff between beaches, as well as Nerja Cave, one of the area’s great natural icons.

Frigiliana adds the charm of its whitewashed streets and its connection with the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park.

It is a perfect getaway if you fancy driving only a little, eating well and combining the coast with a village full of charm. Our advice is very simple:

☀️Morning in Nerja, relaxed lunch

⚡Afternoon in Frigiliana with no eye on the clock

It works especially well in spring and autumn, when you can stroll at your own pace and enjoy the scenery in a more relaxed way.

Getaway 2. Antequera and El Torcal: a short getaway that feels like a much longer trip

Antequera is around 43 to 48 minutes from Málaga, making it one of those getaways you will always be glad to have close at hand. Its great appeal lies in the way it combines heritage, nature and an atmosphere that feels very different from the coast.

The Antequera Dolmens Site is made up of five monuments, including the dolmens of Menga and Viera, as well as El Torcal and Peña de los Enamorados, which already gives you an idea of the destination’s historical and scenic importance.

El Torcal de Antequera is also considered one of the most spectacular karst landscapes in Europe.

If you enjoy photography, gentle hiking or getaways with a cultural touch, this is a sure bet. It is a wonderfully rounded plan for setting off early, walking a little, seeing heritage without the crowds and returning to Málaga the same day with the feeling that you have properly switched off.

Getaway 3. Caminito del Rey: the getaway for when you are craving nature and excitement

From Malaga city centre, the road access to Caminito del Rey is around 59 kilometres and takes just over 50 minutes by car. The route is located in the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes area, and its official platform presents it as one of the province’s great natural attractions.

Here the plan is clear: set off a little early, arrive with your booking sorted and enjoy a getaway that combines scenery, adrenaline and the outdoors. It is ideal if you are travelling as a couple, with friends or if you fancy an experience that is different from the typical urban route.

Getaway 4. Ronda: a classic that is still well worth it

Ronda is around 1 hour 33 to 37 minutes by car from Málaga, and it remains one of the most complete getaways you can do. The great icon is the Puente Nuevo, described by the official tourism board as the symbol and soul of the city, with spectacular views over El Tajo.

The best thing about Ronda is that it does not depend on a single photo. Yes, the Puente Nuevo is impressive, but you also have walks with views, a historic centre, squares, palaces and a pace of visiting that invites you to wander without rushing. It is a getaway that suits you perfectly if you want a mix of scenery, heritage and gastronomy. It is also one of the most versatile options: it works just as well for a day trip as for an overnight stay.

Getaway 5. Granada: one of the great cultural getaways from Malaga

Granada is between 1 hour 26 minutes and 1 hour 35 minutes away by car, depending on the reference point and route, so it fully earns its place on this list of getaways from Málaga.

In the city, you will find a concentration of heritage that is hard to match: the Alcazaba, the Alhambra complex and the Generalife, one of the most important historical sites in Spain.

Granada is for you if you fancy a getaway with more cultural depth. You do not come here just to see things, you come to stroll through neighbourhoods full of character, stop at viewpoints and leave room for a long lunch.

Getaway 6. Cordoba: history, patios and a very comfortable getaway by car

Córdoba is around 1 hour 43 to 44 minutes by car from Málaga, making it a very comfortable option for a full-day cultural getaway. Its star attraction is the Mosque-Cathedral, with its prayer hall of two-tone arches and the Patio de los Naranjos, regarded as one of the most distinctive historic spaces in the whole complex.

If Málaga gives you sea views and Mediterranean light, Córdoba takes you to a city of narrow streets, patios, stone and history. It is a getaway for any time of year, although it is even more enjoyable in the milder months, wandering through the Jewish Quarter and lingering over lunch.

Getaway 7. Tarifa and Bolonia: the getaway for when you want to feel as though you have gone far away

Tarifa is around 1 hour 55 minutes by car from Málaga, and Bolonia around 2 hours 14 minutes, so both comfortably fall within the 3-hour limit.

In Tarifa, stops include the Castle of Guzmán el Bueno, a fortress of Caliphal origin dating back to the 10th century. Bolonia, meanwhile, stands out for its great dune, its open beach and the archaeological site of Baelo Claudia, one of the key places for understanding Roman urban planning in Andalusia.

It is an ideal getaway if you are in the mood for the Atlantic, wind, open scenery and a wilder sense of travel. It has that feeling of “I’ve gone far away” without needing to spend half the day driving. And for a short route from Málaga, that is a luxury.

Which getaway to choose depending on the kind of plan you fancy

If you are looking for a quick and easy option, Nerja and Frigiliana or Antequera make it very simple.

If you would rather have nature with a memorable experience, Caminito del Rey is one of the best cards to play.

For a day of heritage and city sights, Ronda, Granada and Córdoba are safe bets.

And if what you want is more of a road trip feeling, Tarifa and Bolonia will give you exactly that.

Our final recommendation

If it is your first time setting off from Málaga, combine Nerja and Frigiliana for a short plan, Ronda for a wonderfully rounded day trip and Córdoba if you want to raise the cultural level. With those three alone, you already have a perfect mini map of everything around Málaga: coast, white village, scenery and monumental city.

You land and start getting around without any hassle with Wiber. From Malaga Airport, you can collect your car with Wiber, with an office just 5 minutes away and a free shuttle service.
